About Milkwood
Milkwood was designed as a space that is peaceful, minimalist, considered and most of all gentle, harbouring creative energies and a flow state. It has only natural materials, intended to feel like an intersection between the natural and built worlds, embedded in the landscape so that it feels as though you are sunken slightly within the earth. Birch Trees stretch upwards from every window, pine wood lines the doors and frames the windows, the walls are bare plaster, and the warm stone floor offers a practical and beautiful solution. It was designed in the hope of sharing the magic that a space has the capacity to bring.
● the storyMilkwood Studio is a creative studio based just outside of Winchester. It was founded and designed by Tash Fry, a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans interior architecture & design, ceramics, spatial & set design, styling and food.
Trained in interior architecture, yet drawn toward set design and installation art, Tash found herself navigating a space between disciplines - one that wasn’t always clearly defined, or easily understood. Milkwood was created to bridge that gap. A space where ideas could move freely between form, material, and experience.
The idea of Milkwood was born as an idea for a blank canvas space that could meet a multitude of briefs - a working artist studio, an events space, a music space, and much more: an open, adaptable space designed to hold a multitude of creative disciplines.
● About the buildTash designed the studio with flexibility at its core. Every element has been intentionally chosen to allow the space to shift between uses - able to hold everything from intimate making to large-scale installation, both now and in the years to come.
Rooted in the tones, textures, and gentle landscape of the South Downs, the studio draws from the natural environment that has long shaped Tash’s artistic language. Soft, tonal palettes, raw finishes, and a considered use of material create a space that feels like the intersection between nature and architecture.
Natural light played a key role in the design narrative - an essential tool that artists really can’t work without. The intention behind the design was to create a fluid, gentle space with a minimal floor plan so that it can be ever-evolving. Its materiality uses only natural materials including wood, plaster & ceramic to maintain its dialogue to its natural, wilder surroundings.
Image above shows a make-shift table set up sitting within the original open-air garage structure that existed in the studio’s place prior to the build. The original cor-ten steel garage frame was preserved and now exists as a pergola containing an outdoor dining space that speaks to and honours the site’s historic narrative.
